SCORE StartSMART™ Workshop Series

Successful and experienced executives will help you make a "go/no go" decision for starting a business. Attend this new workshop series to learn how to:
  • Evaluate your idea: Are you ready to be a business owner?
  • Develop a marketing strategy. Define and understand your pricing strategy, target market and competition.
  • Create a financial plan. Draft a blueprint to achieve your financial goals and attract funding.
  • Determine funding sources and feasibility. Identify start-up capital.
The SCORE StartSMARTTM Series provides five three-hour workshops with action steps:

The first session is free. Subsequent sessions are $40 each, or $32 each if you sign up for all four at the first session.

How the New Tax Laws Benefit Small Business Owners

Description: There have been a number of major changes to tax laws, and the Internal Revenue Service wants you to know about them. How do those changes affect small businesses in New Jersey? Just in time for tax season, a representative from the Internal Revenue Service will speak about:
  • Major changes in tax law and regulation affecting small business
  • Changes in IRS outreach methods
  • The impact of those changes on New Jersey businesses
  • Topics to be discussed will include Small Business Health Care Coverage Provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Self-Employment Tax changes, and changes to handling Start-Up Expenses (what they are, and how to amortize or expense them properly)
  • Also to be discussed include Requirements for Recordkeeping, Determining an Employee vs. an Independent Contractor, the proper tax treatment of Home-Based Business Expenses, Business Expenses vs. Personal Expenses, and a review of the Tools and Helpful Guidance offered by the IRS Website (Webinars and Virtual Tax Workshops)
Seminar Leader: Todd Cresci is a Stakeholder Liaison at the Internal Revenue Service. Todd has worked for the Internal Revenue Service since 2002. He began in the Examination area as a Tax Compliance Officer conducting Office Audits. After four years he became an Internal Revenue Agent. During his years as an Agent, Todd was selected annually to work with Preparers, performing ERO Compliance visitations and EITC Due Diligence Compliance checks.

His current assignments include Tax Practitioner Institutes, and various other North Jersey and South Jersey Outreach Forums. Todd is currently assigned to the Cherry Hill, NJ office at 57 Haddonfield Road. Todd received his BBA in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts and also earned his MBA in Marketing from the University of Michigan.

Business Tax Issues

Description: This seminar will concentrate on all tax issues affecting the small to medium sized business community. The topics will include required state and tax filings and other reporting requirements. The seminar will also include suggestions for improving financial operations.

Seminar Leader: Leonard Steinberg is the Principal of Steinberg Enterprises, LLC and is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Mr. Steinberg is a specialist in small business and nonprofit organizations. An advocate for small business, he has testified before the House of Representatives Committees on Small business and the Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs. He served on the Federal Taxpayer Advocacy Panel where he worked on behalf of individuals and businesses. His consulting practice concentrates in the following areas: Accounting, Tax, Financial and Administrative Operations, and Board Development.

How to Use Your Foreign Degree in the U.S.

Description: For those who earned a university degree in another country, this seminar provides skills and strategies on how to use that degree and experience to continue a career in the U.S.

More than 1 million immigrants with a BA/BS from their home countries, and the legal right to work, exist as the working poor, earning less than $20,000 a year. In their home countries they may have been bankers, attorneys, business people, educators and nonprofit professionals. In the US they are nannies, cab drivers and security guards.

Seminar Leader: Paula Restrepo is a SCORE volunteer and also a Loan Officer at the Regional Business Assistance Corporation (RBAC). In her native Colombia, Paula was the General Manager of a restaurant company with five branches; she also worked for 4 years in the manufacturing sector as the General Manager of a roasted/ground coffee plant, and was the Strategy Manager for a nonprofit organization dedicated to the pre-incubation and incubation of new technology companies. She came to the US in 2004 and helped launch Upwardly Global NYC, a national award-winning entrepreneurial, non-profit organization that works to integrate fully work-authorized immigrant professionals into the American workforce.

Angel Investing and Other Funding Sources

Description: This seminar provides insight into the world of angel investing. It will focus on key requirements for consideration, how the process works, pros and cons, and who might qualify for this type of funding.  It will also touch upon related types of funding, in particular venture capital and private equity, contrasting the different perspectives of each.

Seminar Leader: The seminar will be led by Dave Plucinsky.  Dave has 35 years of domestic and international business experience. Prior to returning to the USA in late 2008, he spent 20 years working and living in London, England, the last 12 years as a self employed consultant. During this period Dave worked primarily with start-up companies and turn-around situations. In certain of these situations, he was an investor and/or represented investment groups, in others Dave acted in a consultancy role. Financial Accounting and Financial Projections

Additionally, he helped establish and build his company's business in former Iron Curtain countries after the fall of the Berlin wall.  During his career, he worked in various other roles supporting manufacturing, research and development, and sales/marketing operations.
